Liudmila Slivinskaya, MSc
Profile
»My research profile is interdisciplinary and is based on backgrounds in political sciences, and studies of urban development and urban planning. Bridging these two areas, my research interests are located at the interface between urban form and policy-making. My current research focus is two-fold and links urban morphology with methodological research under the umbrella of place-based GIS. I am looking into matters of representation and conceptualisation of contemporary urban forms coupled with the human-geographical notion of place, and, in particular, how the latter is being attempted to formalise within place-based GIS.«

Research
My current research interests revolve around urban form and how we conceptualise and represent it in GIS. The path leading me to this standpoint has not been straightforward, but rather interdisciplinary, which has enriched greatly my approach to the topic. Throughout my studies I have been interested in methodological issues as well as issues of identity and collective memory in an urban morphology context. The latter topics have added a strong qualitative perspective to my approach to urban form, which attempts at reading historical, cultural, and social meanings encoded in built form beyond its mere formal and geometrical properties. This, in its turn, has led me to the debate on space versus place, in particular, the need to recognise and capture qualitative features of urban spaces to reflect the ways in which we perceive and experience them. Two topics are thereby of central relevance to my work: density and centrality. I am looking for ways to evaluate and measure these two dimensions, how they condition the perception of urban form, and how these dimensions inform policy-making. My current main object of investigation is housing estates. My PhD research aims to improve our understanding of how we inhabit urban space, and in which ways we can add place-based GIS methods to the toolbox of urban research.
