The RGS-IBG International Conference annually brings together over 2,000 geographers from around the world, providing a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange. This year, from August 29th to September 1st, the event was jointly organised by the Royal Geographical Society and Imperial College London.

Víctor Cobs-Muñoz, a member of our RAM Lab, made a significant contribution by presenting the paper titled "Conceptualizing and Contextualizing Sacrifice Zones: A Multidisciplinary Approach". This research delves into the pressing issue of sacrifice zones—territories systematically burdened by social and ecological hardships due to sustained discrimination. Cobs-Muñoz's presentation illuminated the intricate spatial conflicts arising from this within intertwined social and ecological systems, along with the structural inequities and determinants of health rooted in historical environmental injustices. The paper explored three key elements for approaching sacrifice zones: social-ecological systems, place constructs from place theories, and the critical realism framework. By combining these elements, the research aimed to enhance understanding and pave the way for further exploration.

The conference provided an invaluable platform for connecting with a diverse community of researchers. Through a multitude of sessions and discussions, we delved deeper into understanding global challenges. The networking opportunities sparked vibrant exchanges of ideas, fostering an atmosphere of enthusiasm and collaboration. Víctor's participation at the RGS-IBG International Conference 2023 was indeed impactful. The event underscored the pivotal role of collaboration in tackling complex issues. We are excited to seamlessly incorporate the insights gained into our ongoing work. If you would like to learn more about the conference, delve into the presented paper, or explore our research group, please feel free to reach out. Your inquiries are more than welcome.
