New team member: Dr Seraphim Alvanides

It was with great joy that we welcomed Dr Seraphim Alvanides to our lab on 1 January 2026! Seraphim's research interests include spatial justice (e.g. how urban and social environments affect health, mobility, active transport), urban sprawl (e.g. the implications of city expansion), and the mapping and analysis of historical and contemporary spatial data. At our lab, Seraphim will continue his research into the spatial humanities (e.g. analysing local toponyms and historical maps) while exploring new research directions such as affordable housing shortages and place stigmatisation. Seraphim is also a co-editor of the journal 'Enviornment and Planning B' and he will continue his editorship while based at Technische Universität Dortmund. Before joining us, Seraphim held positions at the Universities of Leeds, Newcastle, and Northumbria in the United Kingdom, as well as at GESIS (Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences) and the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Bamberg in Germany. A warm welcome to the team!
