New paper on the involvement of public transport authorities in MaaS developments

In recent years, a novel mobility concept has emerged in many metropolitan areas, known as Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). MaaS is considered a key concept in terms of digitalisation and bundling access to various mobility services. Its relevance is evident in various aspects, ranging from offering seamless mobility networks to providing sustainable mobility environments. However, there is a lack of detailed academic research into the involvement of public transport authorities in MaaS developments. Therefore, a study now published by Ibrahim Mubiru in the journal Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives examines the role of transport authorities in the deployment of MaaS measures in three German metropolitan regions, namely Berlin, Hamburg, and the Ruhr area. The study is conducted through a thematic analysis of relevant published documents. The results show that public transport authorities in the case study areas examined have made noticeable efforts to integrate public transport (e.g. trains, trams, and buses) with micro-mobility forms (e.g. bike-sharing) and car-sharing services. Yet, by contrast, they still face major challenges in integrating shared rides (e.g. ride-sharing and ride-sourcing) into their MaaS systems. Therefore, the paper also proposes an integrative and collaborative framework between public transport authorities, private mobility providers, and policymakers to facilitate the MaaS development process where appropriate.
