Egor Kotov participated in SDSL 2026 in Jena

From 16 to 18 September 2026, Egor Kotov participated in Spatial Data Science across Languages (SDSL) 2026, hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, Germany. The workshop brought together developers and researchers working across R, Python and Julia, with discussions followed by a collaborative development day.
During the event, Egor worked on prototypes using graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate spatial analysis. These covered distance calculations for R’s sf ecosystem (via sfgpu), accelerated spatial joins for Apple Silicon in SedonaDB, and permutation tests for spatial statistics in GeoDa and SpatialDependence.jl. Testing and refinement are ongoing, with the aim of making computationally demanding spatial analyses more practical for large datasets.
